Stanley 'Artgerm' Lau's Marvel Snap variants are some of the most popular in the hit game - and he hopes to someday get paid for the game using it

The cover artist isn't sore about his art being included in Marvel Snap, though he'd like to get a cut from the sales.

There is a lot of amazing art available in Marvel Snap. While some are unique to the game – or allegedly stolen from fanart – many are based on iconic covers from Marvel Comics. Stanley 'Artgerm' Lau, who has made many famous covers for both Marvel and DC over the years, is an artist that Marvel Snap has used for their cards. However, it turns out they never told him about it – nor have they paid him for using his art.

To be clear, it doesn’t seem that the Marvel Snap developers have actually stolen art from Artgerm. Instead, they’ve used art that Marvel already has the rights to and translated it into Marvel Snap cards. They used Artgerm’s art without him knowing.

“That’s the truth,” he explains during his panel at MCM Comic Con 2025. “Marvel Snap took whatever I’ve done for the comic world and just turned it into Marvel Snap cards. So, I was not actually involved with the production of it.”

This is something that comic book artists have been struggling with for generations and it, unfortunately, impacts their ability to earn money from their art. Lau doesn't say if his contracts with Marvel stipulated he would get additional monies based on this secondary usage of his work, or if this was something he was hoping to have above and beyond his contracts with Marvel.

“I would like to get a cut from the sales, but I did not.”

Even though he’d like to get paid for the use of his work, he does enjoy seeing his art in video games like Marvel Snap, saying,

“I still love the fact that my art has been applied to different platforms with a different medium. I think that’s still cool.”
